We are a group of citizens based in the North Okanagan Shuswap federal riding who believe Canadian democracy is under threat. Widespread cynicism, especially among youth, and unusually low voter turnout in the last 15 years have led to governments that don’t speak for most Canadians. Stephen Harper’s government represents fewer than one out of 4 Canadians: 61% of eligible voters actually voted in 2011, 40% of those chose Conservative candidates. So only 24% of all voters elected the current federal government.
The candidate in North Okanagan-Shuswap was elected by only 32% of eligible voters.
Many important decisions are now being made without consultation with ordinary Canadians.
Combined with American attack-style politics and with many decisions made behind closed doors, we no longer have a vibrant and thriving democracy. We feel it is critical that more Canadians vote. We aim to inspire Canadians back to the ballot through democratic discussion. To achieve greater participation, we will work collaboratively with all political parties to encourage public discussion on issues of concern such as :
- a fairer economy
- climate change
- inclusive election procedures
- veterans’ rights and needs
- environmental protections
- secure and publicly funded health care
- education, training and meaningful job opportunities
- honourable relations with First Nations peoples
Please join us in the process of bringing about a sustainable future for Canada, no matter what your political persuasion.
